Sealants in Selah
Dental sealants are highly effective in preventing the occurrence of cavities and decay on the chewing surfaces of a person’s back molars. Sealants consist of a thin layer of acrylic that is painted directly on the teeth to smooth out the rough surfaces that are present. This establishes an effective barrier against harmful bacteria and acids, while also making the teeth easier to clean.
The deep grooves and fissures located on an individual’s back teeth are home to nearly 75% of all tooth decay. These areas are notoriously difficult to reach, even with correct brushing and flossing practices. By smoothing out these rough surfaces, they can be significantly easier to clean and maintain. If cared for properly, dental sealants should remain intact for several years.
Some of the best candidates for dental sealants are children and teenagers who are still developing proper brushing and flossing habits; however, many adults also receive dental sealants in order to protect their back teeth from damage.
Applying Dental Sealants
It only takes one visit to our practice to receive dental sealants. The treatment is quick and easy, only taking a couple of minutes per tooth. The process starts by drying and cleaning any tooth that is designated for sealing. Using a cotton swab, the teeth are kept dry throughout the procedure. Next, an etching solution is used to roughen the surface of the teeth. This is done so the teeth can easily bond with the sealant material.
At this point, the etching solution is rinsed off, and the teeth are re-dried. Acrylic sealant coating is then painted onto the surface of the teeth and allowed to dry completely. The final step is to make sure that the teeth have been fully sealed and that all of the deep grooves and fissures present on the surface of the teeth have been completely blocked off.
