The toothbrush is one of the most important tools used to maintain oral health. This piece of equipment is something that all of us have and use on a regular basis, but just how much do you know about your toothbrush? The team at Selah Creek Dental wanted to take today and go over a few of the fun and interesting facts about toothbrushes. Let’s get started!

Fact #1: A variety of materials have been used to create toothbrush bristles.

The bristles of the toothbrush are what do all of the cleaning, so it only makes sense that there have been a couple of different materials used to see what delivers the cleanest smile. The truth is that toothbrushes have been around for quite some time. Over the years we have seen bristles made from leaves, coarse hairs from a hog’s neck, and more, all leading to the nylon bristles that we all know and use today!

Fact #2: A toothbrush should be replaced every three months.

Given that we use our toothbrushes so frequently, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that we need to be cognizant of when it’s time to replace them. The team at Selah Creek Dental requires changing your toothbrush every three months, more if you have gum diseases. In the case that you do have gum disease, you are going to want to change your toothbrush every four to six weeks.

Fact #3: The average person brushes less than the recommended amount.

It’s recommended that you brush your teeth for two to three minutes twice daily to really clean your teeth. While that may be the case, very few people are actually brushing this amount. In a study conducted by the Academy of General Dentistry, it was reported that the average person will only brush for 45 to 70 seconds. This is only half the amount of time people should be brushing.

Fact #4: An invention people could not live without.

There have been countless products invented in the last century, millions even before that, but in 2003 the toothbrush was selected as the number one invention that most American citizens could not live without. As your family dentistry office in Salah, we are proud to hear this statistic and hope that it still rings true in 2019!

Fact #5: The world’s most expensive toothbrush costs $4,000.

If you thought that the electric toothbrush that you just invested in was a lot, you’re not going to believe our fifth fact in today’s blog post. The world’s most expensive toothbrush, made from titanium, is listed at $4,000. We can’t believe just how much this particular toothbrush costs! The real crazy thing about this particular fact is that said toothbrush isn’t even electric!

Fact #6: You spend 122 days brushing your teeth.

We love looking at the statistics associated with dental care! If you were to total up all of the time that you spend brushing your teeth in your lifetime (that is, if you were following the recommended two to three minute brush recommended by your dentist), you would spend 122 days brushing your teeth. With that being said, the average person actually only spends a total of roughly 38.5 days brushing their teeth during their lifetime. It’s a pretty big difference, isn’t it?

Fact #7: You can burn calories just by brushing your teeth.

As surprising as it may be, brushing teeth can actually help you burn calories in a given day. If you were to brush your teeth three times a day, you could burn over 3,500 calories in a year. Okay, so maybe it’s not quite as impressive as a few miles on the treadmill or an early morning hike, but hey, it counts for something!
